LEGO Ninjago The Movie Video Game follows the same story as the movie. The scenario focuses on the character of Lloyd, the green ninja and leader of the ninjas of the city of Ninjago. With his friends, Lloyd will have to put an end to the sinister plans of Garmadon, a black ninja constantly wanting to invade Ninjago week after week. Humor is still omnipresent and I admit to laughing on different occasions, especially when it came to an ultimate weapon and a … chat! By the way, we also parody some films and successful games that will get you a smile or two!
Is LEGO Ninjago another LEGO game just a simple copy and paste of what we saw in the past? Yes and no. In fact, the essence of the LEGO games was retained so that you still have to go through levels and accumulate Studs by destroying just about everything in our path. More than 200 bricks of gold are also scattered throughout Ninjago, as well as special parchments replacing the famous red bricks of previous games LEGO. In short, LEGO Ninjago is another aspect that can be considered classic of the franchise LEGO.
That said, TT Games has included shooting sequences to vary the missions of the game, so you can take control of the huge robots of the ninjas in several levels and strafing your enemies in automatic shooting sequences like Panzer Dragoon Orta. Nevertheless, these portions of the game are not as entertaining as they appear. In fact, even if everything is destroyed around us, the automatic advance of our character ensures that we have only limited control over the action. What’s more, it quickly becomes monotonous to simply shoot at anything that moves without real interest or challenge.
TT Games has nevertheless strongly modified the classic structure of a LEGO game. Thus, rather than offering missions bound by a huge world, LEGO Ninjago puts forward a world in which missions are an integral part of the universe of Ninjago. That means yes, you have to complete the main missions one after the other, but once a portion of the story is over, it will be a portion of the world of Ninjago that will be open to free play and not just missions already completed.
In other words, LEGO Ninjago is a great universe whose missions are an integral part of the proposed world rather than being independent portions of it. It also means that the objects that can be harvested in missions can be in the open world. You no longer have to collect gold bricks or red bricks / parchments in missions, you can now do it in missions or in the open world. Even your Harvest of Studs will no longer be separated between missions and your progression in the world of Ninjago. This makes sure that without being the biggest LEGO game, LEGO Ninjago is undoubtedly the most open game of the franchise so far.
TT Games also put more focus on the fighting, presence of ninjas obliges. You will be able to make combos and improve the techniques of your ninjas by progressing in the mode History and by collecting Studs. This time the Studs are not only virtual currency, but also the equivalent of experience making you progress in your ninja levels. As a result, you can improve your combos, damage to enemies, Studs harvested after defeating opponents, etc. Some enemies will also require you to use more than one technique.
Unlike other LEGO games, if you only press a button to make a series of shots, some types of enemies will block your shots. You will need to use more than one technique to eliminate those on your way, bringing with the range of available shots an interesting variety to the monotonous fights of previous LEGO games.
LEGO Ninjago has good ideas and is the most open LEGO game to date, it is also the most mixed game I have ever played. In fact, if merging the main missions and the Ninjago world is a good idea, execution is more questionable. Many times I did not know what I could or could not harvest and how my progress would be affected. I tell you so that you do not have the same uncertainty as me: what you reap in missions is linked to your overall progress. So the golden brick on which you put your hand in a mission is a golden brick of the world of Ninjago and not a brick of the mission. Sounds simple said like this, but it took me a while to realize it and get me out of my confusion.
