Dungeon Defenders Download offers to defend a series of sanctuaries against hordes of attackers. But the game of Trendy Entertainment stands out enough from his rival to argue that the two titles do not really play in the same court. Featuring a much larger RPG dimension, it offers you to choose between four classes of characters each with specific abilities (whether in terms of traps or powers). The apprentice is a spellcaster who hides behind towers and magic defenses. Equally versatile, the squire is a hand-to-hand fighter, able to build both solid and deadly obstacles. The hunter’s traps generate zone effects as she aligns her targets from a distance. Finally, the Monk is a defensive hero capable of weakening the enemy as well as protecting or healing his allies. In short, you should have no trouble finding a character that matches your style of play.
Whatever the chosen hero, each part takes the same form: you start next to an Eternia Crystal that you aim to protect evil creatures who want to destroy it. Typical of the heroic fantasy, the bestiary consists of orcs, goblins, black elves, skeletons, ogres and other wyverns, each with a particular way to attack. These monsters break through the gates of your sanctuary in the form of several successive waves. Fortunately, you have the opportunity to organize your defenses before the start of the fight and between each assault. For that, only one resource: the crystals, that let fall the fallen enemies and that deliver the coffers obtained in reward. They serve you to buy your defenses, the radial menu used for this purpose also to repair, boost or resell an already placed item. Once everything is ready, the fight can be started, keeping in mind that you can only manage by getting your hands dirty.
You have for this purpose a basic attack, an alternative move and some specific skills unlocked as you progress: the apprentice may cause a shock wave, the squire perform an attack on 360 °, the huntress become invisible and the monk boost his acolytes, each one having moreover a capacity of care. Dungeon Defenders has a great wealth of evolution heroes, since their rise in level, durable, gives you the opportunity to improve their resistance, power, speed or frequency of attack, or to favor the upgrade of the defenses they have. Too bad the latter are so few (especially when you leave Orcs Must Die!), Leading you to repeat all too often the same strategies. The designers have obviously preferred to focus on the RPG aspect, giving you the opportunity to equip your avatar with different weapons and armor. All confer special bonuses and can be improved by investing crystals (the cost is exponential and quickly astronomical).
The set works superbly well because it offers a real feeling of rising power while renewing the mechanisms of tower defense we appreciate so much: often supported by a monstrously strong boss, the final wave of each level of the campaign turns out so difficult that it requires you to place your defenses as judiciously as possible. A thing not always simple as the maps, remarkably well designed, can be twisted! The problem is that over your different parts, you will realize how much character classes can be unbalanced. If the squire, clearly abused, can be safely embodied by a beginner, the huntress is simply not viable solo. You will realize then that Dungeon Defenders was conceived in the perspective of the game in cooperation. The strong complementarity of the heroes is defined according to a classic pattern: the huntress slows down and filters the enemy forces while the mage builds his towers behind the defenses of the squire and the monk protects all this beautiful little world. It is therefore better to play several, except that this beautiful synergy is sometimes spoiled in multi by the possibility of selling the pitfalls posed by other players.
Each item purchased costs a number of defense units, the maximum amount of which is set by the map. If the principle is rather well seen, it generates some frustrating abuse of removing the defenses of a hero in favor of those of another considered more “cheat” (usually the squire or the apprentice). As a result, online games, which allow 2-4 players to cooperate, are not as rewarding as expected. Fortunately, you also have the opportunity to share your experience locally with the option, more than welcome, split screen game, which will give you the opportunity to develop previously discussed strategies. Add to this the presence of a Challenge mode, which imposes various restrictions on the levels of the campaign, and a survival mode, which offers you to hold as long as possible, and you will have an idea of the wealth of title in terms of content.
It must be admitted, however, that Dungeon Defenders has no shortage of game design choices more or less questionable, which greatly affect the pace of the game. Repeated several times the map at the end of each wave to collect the fallen crystals (which you can not to transport a limited number), to be obliged to go to the forge to be able to sell or improve its equipment, to have to go back to the Eternia Crystal to launch the following assault: these are all unjustified constraints which tend to lengthen excess preparation phases. And yet, god knows that the moves are heavy in this title which is not really the best ambassador for the Unreal Development Kit. Although interesting, the fights lack of fishing and deliver extremely little sensations. Dungeon Defenders does not have the fast pace of an Orcs Must Die! (the creatures break much more slowly), nor its physical engine which allowed to send the green-skin in pieces in all the directions. It does, however, benefit from shimmering cel shading graphics and a very successful overall design. Finally, at least with regard to the characters and sets, the cumulative interface for its faults and errors in ergonomics.
It combines hideous and impractical windows with icons of mind-blowing size (for a bit, you’d think you’re playing on iPhone), without saving you the useless submenus and tooltips that give the whole an impression of clutter. There will also be some problems with the configuration of the controls in the PC version, as well as a French translation barely worthy of what Google might have released and which should push you to retake the title in English. The result is that you feel like you’re playing a beta version, whether balancing or finishing. That could even discourage some, where the title seems to us on the contrary deserve the investment of 11.99 euros or 1200 MS points requested. Dungeon Defenders is indeed a solid experience, rich and addictive, which takes all its salt in local multiplayer sessions.
