Some time before the release of DOOM We ask the publisher Bethesda, when we can expect because test patterns. The German branch replies that there will be nothing before the official release. Bethesda’s official statement later reads: Doom is a big game that consists of a single player campaign, an online multiplayer mode and SnapMap. All three elements are integral parts of the complete Doom experience, which are intended to be experienced as part of the complete package. Since both SnapMap and multiplayer require server binding that is not available until launch, the test patterns will not arrive until the launch day.
We sigh. There are two possibilities: Either they are really serious, or the game is so bad that the publisher does not want to see a test online in the critical sales phase shortly after release. So while we’re installing Doom, we’re equally curious and skeptical, because logically, it’s not clear why you should not be able to test the single-player campaign in advance. Too bad.
When we finally play Doom, we laugh at our (and Bethesda’s supposed) concerns. Okay, the multiplayer does not cut us out of our shoes (more on this at the end of this article), but the singleplayer part is a joy. The shooter specialists from id Software have done more than clean work. They have successfully transferred the old Dooms from the 90s into 2016. We briefly consider buying hats so we can pull them.
Only a few minutes into the game, we already have to giggle. When one of the Mars researchers wants to introduce himself to us via a display, our navy rips the communication panel out of the anchorage and throws it in the corner. Even the hero in a Doom has no real desire for an exhausting lab, after all we know what it will be for eons of time. Because yes, the rough plot coincides to a point with the one we already know from all the predecessors: Researchers on Mars fumble around with hell and release demons – and we should fix it again.
In the following hours there are always small storylines and sometimes one or the other arranging monologue (our navy remains mute) of Dr. med. Samuel Hayden, whose opponent Olivia Pierce or KI Vega, but who does not listen and instead refills the coffee or goes to the bathroom, does not miss too much. The only outstanding detail: Our Doom Marine is not an average soldier this time. But that is already apparent in the first seconds of the game.
In the first seconds of the game even the first monsters have to believe that Doom does not spend a lot of time with intro stuff. But at least it takes time to celebrate almost iconic content accordingly. A special moment: how our hero crosses his typical armor. The game proceeds in a similar way when we find new and at the same time well-known weapons. The double shotgun and the Doom Marine – that’s a bit like Han Solo and Chewbacca, a reunion after all those years wants to be celebrated. And Doom actually throws a murder party for those who have their first shooter experience with their predecessors.
The nostalgia and the sometimes ironic bowing to the old games make up much of the fascination of the new Doom. However, this does not mean, conversely, that you can not have fun with the game if you do not know the originals or their console versions. Anyone who does not enjoy the reunion of the Doom Marines with his chainsaw, is just happy about what he can do with the improper tools pretty thing. Old joke question on the edge: What exactly do you need a chainsaw on Mars?
