While the reboot has been on the rise for many years in the world of the seventh art, this trend has recently made its way into the video game. Suddenly, the names remain, the icons are good but under cover of a redesign and / or gameplay. Thus, big franchises seem to brave time with insolent grace. Devil May Cry is a series that has always been questioned, all things considered. Eager not to stagnate, she has over time rethought her hero with more or less efficiency. Monolithic, imperial, foufou or even mocking, Dante will have played the central role of the saga that saw him born until he shared the spotlight with Nero in the fourth episode. If this last part had proved of quality, it was nevertheless necessary to evolve again, especially as the competition in the field of beat’em all becomes more and more rough. So, instead of experimenting in Japan, the Japanese developer has preferred to entrust the reins of this reboot to the English Ninja Theory who had already illustrated in the genre thanks to the Honorable Heavenly Sword.
As stated above, DmC Devil May Cry is a new beginning for the saga. However, this state of affairs is mainly based on a disheveling visual aspect and not a complete overhaul or even partial gameplay. This is also what surprises the most in this album that is finally resting a little too much on its achievements. Be careful, this is not really a problem in itself because in the end, the fun is indeed present, but in return, we can be disappointed by this lack of ambition. All the more true that we are still suffering from major camera problems that seem to be linked ad vitam aeternam to the franchise. On the other hand, the enlightened fan will quickly find its marks in the sense that Dante will be able to switch again between various weapons in order to vary the combos and thus obtain a higher rank at the end of each of the 20 stages composing the adventure. In this regard, note that the life varies between 9 and 11 hours depending on your ability and level of difficulty. Do not panic though since between the seven modes from Fetus to I am a living god of the beat’em all, you should find a challenge at your level.
To stay in trouble, we will report moderately punitive deaths and yellow orbs, related to the resurrection, somewhat underused. This is due to the many checkpoints enamelling the progression that have the merit of not frustrating the player in his progress. However, the use of said orbs highlights another problem. Indeed, we will soon want to resuscitate against the bosses, not because of their difficulty but indeed because of the length of the clashes. We also realize that boss patterns are not very numerous and that the method to overcome does not vary greatly from one monster to another despite some cold and unconvincing attempts to sometimes energize the confrontation. Although these passages lack subtlety, they will nevertheless be the means to highlight Arbiter and Osiris, two weapons that allow you to pull towards you (or enemies) or on the contrary to propel themselves towards them.
On this point, Ninja Theory has managed his shot by sprinkling his baby aerobatic sequences based on anchor points during which it will use both weapons to reach your destination without falling into the void. Ingenious like the enemies of fire and ice that can only be worn through your fake, your ax or even your gloves associated with the mentioned elements. In the end, it will be regrettable that these sequences are not more numerous and especially better integrated into the mechanics of progression in order to revive the machine. It is frustrating to note that the opening scene of Chapter 15 (of which we are surprised) did not emulate the other levels.
Beyond this observation, know that in addition to the aforementioned toys, you will find the essential Ebony and Evory or even Aquila, giant stars with three branches that can block your enemies. In total, no less than eight weapons that, coupled with specific combos, will allow you to achieve classy sequences after a short time of adaptation. You will have to master the various combos mostly built around two action buttons and pause time to send your opponents in the air before firing them. Note however that the timing seems less precise than in the past and that unlike a Bayonetta, to name just him, you should be able to easily get out your favorite shots with practice. However, you will have to buy the combos before using them. To do this, you will simply have to use improvement points and use them to recover what interests you the most. A recent attack does not suit you? No problem, just find a statue to access the store, to pick up your point and use it in another way. Flexible, the system offers in short to enjoy the fighting according to his style of play. Finally, for those who ask, you will once again to recover red orbs to buy items of care or diabolism.
Because yes, let’s not forget that Dante remains a Nephilim, in other words a child born of an angel and a demon. By the same token, he has retained some traits of dad like that of temporarily turning into an overpowering demon. As we can see, DmC Devil May Cry has no shortage of assets as it is based on a sought after design, atypical but above all eclectic. No doubt that some choices will not please everyone but the interest of a reboot is to try new ideas, we will not complain about this wind of visual freshness. Finally, this episode ensures graphically but we will still blame the developers for not having further highlighted the various capabilities of Dante, or more generally the good ideas of soft, to boost the story by offering more variety in situations, the brawny lambda or boss fights, stuffy and moderately tasty. Never mind, we have a good beat’em all, unequal but that fulfills his contract by giving us a good dose of fun nine hours. Not so bad for a test shot especially as this PC adaptation is excellent.
