Already very focused arcade, DiRT Showdown download continues its turn action and great show with the arrival of Showdown. Clearly intended for FlatOut aficionados or other Destruction Derby, this one gains in fun what it loses in depth and could therefore shock more than one fan. So, successful bet? Formerly named Colin McRae, the series we now know as DiRT has gradually forgotten its roots with the disappearance of licenses and rally itself. Showdown takes a new step and is simply timed events, the manual, the car settings (suspensions, supports, distribution of braking, etc ..) and driving aids and the cockpit view, which at she alone conferred a semblance of realism on the whole. Some will shout, rightly, to scandal, these omissions reveal a certain laziness of the developers. It must be admitted, however, that once in the heat of the moment, these absences are hardly embarrassing and do not spoil the sadistic pleasure that can be felt in slaughtering any opponent within reach of bumper.
Three types of tests will then allow you to give free rein to your violence. We will first find rallycross racing in which you will overcome seven opponents. All means are good to win, from fishtail to delayed braking, whether in the Classic, Dominate or Elimination modes. Note that circuits in 8 with many intersections appear for ever more creased sheet metal and action. Then, the very controversial gymkhana of DiRT 3 is also back. However, this one will take many forms and the classic runs will very often give way to very nice obstacle courses. Finally, and this is the big novelty of the app, you can participate in destruction tests. These are again varied and you may be sometimes the target to kill, sometimes the hunter.
In this case, your goal will be simple: go head on all that moves to destroy the opponent. Some high arenas will allow you to push competitors in a vacuum and in any case, the pleasure will be immense. Know also that the Joyride is always in the game, it allows again to drive freely in semi-open areas to find hidden items and perform certain missions (jump over an obstacle, destroy a barrier, etc.). At the level of the gameplay, Showdown resumes in outline what made the success of the series, relying in particular on the arcade to excess. The grip is thus immediate, especially since the sensitivity of management and the difficulty in general have been revised downward. Flashbacks are also back, but do not expect health walks. Indeed, the races are more open than ever and it is possible to go from the first to the last place (and vice versa) in the blink of an eye. This is due in particular to the behavior of a very aggressive AI whose sole purpose is to cover the sheet metal track. Being out of first place may be frustrating, but the ambient bazaar is also conducive to revenge and epic racing.
Note that you will have for this a boost that can be the source of many achievements. In the end, the physiognomy of the tests seems rather consistent and quite enjoyable, especially in comparison with a DiRT 3 which proposed similar characteristics without giving the player the means to replicate. It is in multiplayer that this nifty gameplay will take its full measure including the ability to play splitted screen. The parties should then book a lot of laughs, knowing that it will be possible to post your videos on YouTube again, but also to face and send ghosts via the new RaceNet system. This obviously does not obscure the many defects of the software some of which are recurrent.
We will thus think of the return of an impersonal career mode made of a disjointed succession of events. Similarly, we can only deplore the fact that many of the circuits on the program are directly from the previous opus, which again indicates a certain form of laziness on the part of Codemasters. A graphic facelift has however been made and all will be rather pleasing to the eye. Thus, if not realistic, the title offers very neat light effects and shimmering colors of the most beautiful effect. In short, this DiRT Showdown offers some weight qualities and should easily satisfy fans of action and crumpled sheet metal. While being perfectible, it remains very pleasant to take in hand and eminently fun to use. You can not ask much more for a typical arcade racing game.
DiRT Showdown continues the momentum of its predecessor by clearly moving towards the arcade and the action to the extreme. This bias will probably not unanimous, and we will for example deplore the disappearance of many options or a cockpit view that has yet participated in the fame of the series. However, it is clear that the result is rather positive since the title provides a dose of immense fun. The disappointed FlatOut 3 and the nostalgic of Destruction Derby could therefore find there the solution to all their problems.
Over the length, it must be admitted that this Showdown has trouble keeping us in suspense. The fault, for one part, its gameplay not very varied, with identical sensations that we are on the asphalt, land or even on the snow. In addition, contacts are singularly lacking in pepts, a shame for a stock-car title “slightly” based on destruction. The immersion is also not up to our expectations, with a cockpit view to absent subscribers, just like the weather elsewhere, apart from circuits at different times of the day. It’s a shame, especially as the management of splash water on the windshield was really well done in DiRT 3. If we add to all that endless loading times and circuits quite repetitive overall, we start to ask questions.
