While visitors to the Tokyo Game Show spent just 15 minutes playing Code Vein, we had the opportunity to spend several hours immersing ourselves in the vampire RPG – all in the comfort of the publisher’s presentation room, with no jet lag ! With an eye for the vampire RPG announced under the slogan “Prepare to dine”, we explored every corner of the demo and of course defeated the boss at the end of the site. Although it looks like console diet, Code Vein is also released for the PC. Nice!
A first striking difference to Dark Souls and Co. shows in the shape of blond-curled Mia immediately at the start of the game. In Code Vein we are obviously traveling in pairs, even when we play solo. Then the AI takes control of our companion, who heals us at mortal danger and otherwise supports with buffs and ranged attacks. Still, the lady is not always exemplary smart, the early demo version but also does not correspond to the finished product. An online connection allows friends to take over Mia, creating a classic co-op game. At the moment, the developers seem to be thinking about adding more multiplayer content.
Whether we can change characters later is not yet known, but we think that in view of other, already presented characters for probable. When leveling, we could not invest any points in attributes, this happened automatically. In the finished game we will hopefully have a free hand. We earn experience points, called haze, by killing enemies and collecting items that credit us with a certain amount of the currency.
So far, so well known: The combat system is similar to that of From Softwares works. Heavy and light attacks, rolling away, blocking – the timing is different and there are fewer felt I-frames when dodging than in Dark Souls, but the underlying principle feels immediately familiar to fans of the template. Unique, however, is the so-called drain attack: As a bloodsucker, the hero imbibes the lifeblood of his victims in this particularly heavy melee attack. However, we must first recharge the action, and the range leaves much to be desired. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to quench your thirst on a regular basis, because not only do enemies overcome by the drain drop a lot of haze, also the number of magic points increases.
And with them, we activate special abilities such as a fireball to shoot, a buff for attack, additional electro-damage to our weapon, or a dodge bonus. Finally, a drain charges our special bar, which allows us to blow enemies up with one blow, knocking them out of our hits – and a new drain! – are delivered defenseless. With a little skill and timing we counter enemies and get a free and very effective drain. Here Code Vein seems to rely on the classic “high risk, high reward” principle.
For about three hours we linger in the world of Code Vein and are attracted by the placement of the opponents, encouraging them to look around instead of blindly advancing. The weapons, from the rifle to the hammer to the halberd to the two-handed sword, feel very different and shine in very different situations. It is not yet known if we can carry the weapons with one or two hands on request. This was not possible in the demo yet. While the beginning of the level with the dark cave passages looks scary, but also a bit boring, the Bosskampfarena presents itself in the open air between high-rise ruins significantly more impressive. With several stages and tough attacks, the Queen’s Knight does its job as a boss. And although Mia has little to counter his attacks, it helps if she takes the giants attention for a short time, then we can heal or buff.
Who or what is in the gigantic armor, we do not know exactly, only that it is a so-called “Lost”, so a creature that has fallen completely to the thirst for blood. This of course reminds of the Hollows from Dark Souls, this should not really surprise anyone at this point. Although many elements are borrowed from the brands of From Software, we have licked blood – thanks to the peculiarities of the combat system and the refreshing setting. In the long term, the variety and the extent must be correct, but we will learn that only next year.
